My friend, Janie, has a large collection of Blue Willow dishes. I love the solid look of the bright lemons against the delicate pattern of the old Blue Willow plate.

- In the beginning of this blog I set a goal of one small painting a day for one year. While I didn't reach my goal, I did complete 125 small daily paintings. I still enjoy the tiny format and do them when I can. This is my 30th year as a professional painter and yet with this new goal I feel like it's a new beginning. I am very excited. Wow! I really like this painting. I love the way the texture and pattern is depicted. It is simply beautiful.
i think frank gardner once commented on how he loved your lemon paintings, and i really have to agree. there is definitely an inspiration or a passion that comes through in your still lives with lemons. the colors, the brushstrokes are each perfectly placed and balanced, and your mastery of complicated patterns is superb...fabulous blue willow plate. there is just something about the way you paint lemons....... :)
I have been thinking about why I love to paint lemons and why others like lemons in still life paintings. Lemons are unique. Nothing in the fruit world is more sour, yet adding sugar makes them incredibly delicious. What is fish or seafood without lemon? We don't just grab one and eat it. It's shape is more interesting than a round orange or apple. It's sunny color lifts our spirits. It's compliment, blue violet is the color of the deep blue sky. Enough analyzing...glad y'all enjoy my lemon paintings. Thanks for stopping by.
I too have to agree,you are a master at lemons and blue willow. There is something about those two together when you paint them. They are so happy and fresh.

Happy, maybe that is why people like lemons so much? I know when I look at a lemon it elicits a good feeling. I don't get the same feeling about, say, an apple. It's more like, eat your apple... be healthy.
I have these dishes and have never tackled trying to paint the pattern. You inspire me to try it though.
