I love painting patterns in fabrics. This blue and white check dish towel is a favorite. The red white and blue color palette adds to the summer feel of berries in a vintage Buffalo Ware bowl.
As always, I determine my palette and premix my paints. If the mixed colors look good on the palette they will look good in the painting....a plan of action!

I'm always amazed when you say you premix your paints! I've never tried doing that and I don't really know anyone else who does. Your work is gorgeous, so it obviously works.
I love both these paintings. The blue and white fabric really makes the red strawberries sing!
Thanks, Virginia. A painting needs to start with the design..part of that is determining what the darkest dark is and the lightest light is. All other colors must fall between those two. I like to determine what my "color design" is at this point, too. In the case of this little painting of strawberries it would be roughly triadic yellow/blue/red. I then mixed values light to dark of each of those colors, the blues having the lightest to dark range. Whistler premixed, and many other artists. It might seem overplanned or tedious, actually it is very freeing. You make most of your decisions ahead and when you start to paint you paint. If your palette looks harmonious then your painting will too.
Thanks for your detailed comment, Jennifer. Today I tried my version of pre-mixing. I could probably use some lessons, but I found that it was really helpful! I want to try doing it again tomorrow.
