The Girl with the Watering Can, Lemons, tea pot, tulips

" Girl with the Watering Can "
Oil
34" x 34"
Finally finished this still life. I will also post it with the earlier post showing the progression of this painting. I am pleased with the painting. I was considering changing the blue background to something else but the blue worked best, tying in the china bowl, cup & saucer. A good example of the human shape taking center stage, no matter the other strong contrasts that might be going on. I have another show this week and feel ready, lots of new work, just a few more to frame.

I absolutely love this painting! I like the flow of subtle color throughout the painting. I bet it was fun painting the small painting on the cover of the book.

jennifer, this painting turned out just lovely. and again, i am amazed at your rendering of the fabric. i do like the blue background, i'm not sure what other color you could have used that wouldn't not have distracted from the composition. good luck and have a great time at your show!!

Thanks Teresa, Time-wise, I think the last post was on day 5/6 of this painting. I would say I only spent another 2 full days, just needed the time since that post to do other paintings, reflect on what this one needed. The deadline for the show this week forced the completion, that's the way I work!

Thanks, Kim. The cover was fun. Believe it or not it is the first copy of a master painting I have ever done. I always wanted to copy for study purposes, but have never taken the time. I think the solid cover of the book is the eye's resting place for this large, busy painting.

Thanks, Christine. I agree. I think I realized that the blue worked, another color would have just created to much going on. My husband has decided this is a woman's painting. His way of saying he doesn't care for it! What a diplomat.

Thanks, Deborah. I have missed doing more daily paintings. Guess I need to come up with a new title for my endeavors. Thanks for following my blog.

Hey, Christine. The show was this past weekend and it went very well. I can now get going on commissions and more daily painting. I miss the satisfaction of the little paintings. Oh, also need to fit more time in for exercise!

Such a beautiful, rich painting! I love that there are areas of pattern and detail alongside areas of more solid color- and the proportion of those seems perfect. It makes you want to spend a while wandering around the table enjoying each object and then the effect of the whole. Marvelous!

Thanks, Susan. My design idea here was to find a plain object to use where the book is, as a resting place for the eye, a break from the busy patterns of cloth and china. It's so fun to get feedback to see what other people see in a painting. I don't use a mirror to check composition, etc., probably should but I do turn them upside down and sideways and on large pieces they usually get to a 90% done phase when I leave them for a while before deciding what I need to do to finish.
