Still Life with Meyer Lemons

" Meyer Lemons on Striped Cloth "
Oil
6"x6
Favorite fabric, favorite lemons! Meyer lemons are so beautiful, so delicate. They make Sunkist lemons look like "tough guys".
Tip of the day: A super brush holder to keep brushes at hand while you paint. Fill a plastic tub 8" wide by 6" deep (dried dates come in these) 2/3 full with dried black beans or other small dried beans maybe even popcorn. Stand your oil painting brushes, end down. Keeps them separate and in view, no brushes rolling around. I don't know if this would be good for acrylics because the water in the brush might damage the ferrule. I have used this "bean pot brush holder for years. It holds many brushes. After cleaning brushes for the day I lay them flat to dry.

Hi Jennifer, nice brushstrokes, rich color and great expression! Your tip is quite interesting. Thanks for your nice comments about my work, you're very kind. I'll link your blog too, your work is excellent.

Thanks, Christine. I need to paint more leaves, I struggle with them. It's paint on, wipe out, add/subtract. I find I zone out..maybe I'll try a really large brush that I can't get fussy with.

Thanks for visiting my blog, Fabio! All the way from Brazil! That warms my heart as I live in the high mountains of central Idaho..ski country. I have been out enjoying the snow lately. I tend to hibernate in my studio too much in the winter.

I love your bold and rich colours, not only in this piece but through all your work. I couldn't say which is my favorite, maybe the Gerber Daisies? Hmmm ... the handbags are fantastic too.

Thanks, Doris. I paint directly from the set-up. I use a three sided set-up box (two walls, floor). I line the box with various colored papers or fabrics. Then I light it and paint away! I want to try the more classical approach of very dark background with just the objects receiving light, but can't seem to find the time. Guess I need all the color in my life I can get!

This is a lovely painting. I really like the leaves. I like the ratio of the painting as well, 3 leaves, two lemons, one plate.

Thanks, Elizabeth. Referring to ratios must be the mathematian in you! Actually, Three, Two, One would be a clever title. Math and titles I'm not good at.

Funny I do not think of myself as a mathematian, as there are those (like myself) in architecture that are not great shakes at math. Proportions and ratios seem to be felt more from the gut than figured out by formula... probably why I like the fine arts so much...

Love it, Love it, Love it! Queen of stripes and lemons!

Thanks, Mary. I sliced one of these lemons and put it in a cup of hot water. There is the faintest orange taste, much sweeter than regular lemons. Devine! Must head over to your blog and see what you are up to. I've been teaching a beg/int oil class..nine students. Lots of fun and they are all making progress! So gratifying to see.
